How much does it cost to run a space heater?
Most plug-in heaters are 1,500 W on high. Check your bill for your rate per kWh.
How this is calculated
Formula: Cost = watts ÷ 1000 × hours × % on-time × rate per kWh.
Assumptions: All electric heaters turn about 100% of their power into heat. If the thermostat cycles off, enter less than 100% on-time. The US average residential rate is roughly 16–17¢/kWh; yours may differ.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 1500 W heater cost per hour?
1.5 kWh × your rate. At 16¢/kWh that is about 24¢ per hour.
Are oil-filled heaters cheaper to run?
Not per watt. A 1,500 W oil heater uses the same power as any 1,500 W heater; it just releases heat more slowly.
Is a space heater cheaper than central heat?
It can be if you heat only one room and turn the main thermostat down.
Is it safe to use with an extension cord?
Manufacturers say plug heaters directly into the wall. Most extension cords are not rated for 12.5 amps for hours.
