How long will my propane tank last?
Pick your tank and enter the BTU rating of the appliance (printed on its label).
How this is calculated
Formula: Hours = (tank lb × 21,548 BTU/lb × % full) ÷ (appliance BTU/hr × % output).
Assumptions: Propane holds about 21,548 BTU per pound (about 91,500 BTU per gallon; 1 lb ≈ 0.236 gal). A 20 lb tank holds about 4.7 gallons. Cold weather lowers tank pressure and can cut real run time.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a 20 lb tank last on a grill?
A typical 30,000 BTU grill on full burns a 20 lb tank in about 14 hours. Most people cook at medium, so 18–20 hours is common.
How long does a 20 lb tank last on a Mr. Heater Buddy?
On the 9,000 BTU high setting, about 48 hours; on the 4,000 BTU low setting, about 107 hours.
How do I tell how full my tank is?
Weigh it. Subtract the tare weight (TW) stamped on the collar; the rest is propane.
Why does my tank run out faster in winter?
Cold propane vaporizes slower, so pressure drops and appliances may sputter before the tank is truly empty.
