How many cubic yards of mulch or gravel do I need?
Measure the area in feet and the depth in inches. 2–3 inches is typical for mulch.
How this is calculated
Formula: Cubic yards = length × width × (depth in inches ÷ 12) ÷ 27. Bags = cubic feet ÷ bag size, rounded up. Tons = cubic yards × density.
Assumptions: Rectangular area; gravel around 1.4 tons per cubic yard (varies 1.3–1.7 by stone type). For circles use area = 3.14 × radius².
Frequently asked questions
How many bags in a cubic yard?
27 cubic feet ÷ 2 cu ft bags = 13.5 bags, so 14.
How deep should mulch be?
2–3 inches for beds. More can smother roots.
How much does a yard of gravel weigh?
About 1.4 tons for typical crushed stone or pea gravel.
Should I order extra?
Add 5–10% for settling and uneven ground.
