How much does my refrigerator or freezer cost to run?
The yellow EnergyGuide label lists estimated kWh per year. If you only know watts, use the second option.
How this is calculated
Formula: Yearly cost = kWh per year × rate. Wattage method: watts × 24 × 365 × on-time % ÷ 1000.
Assumptions: Compressors run about 30–40% of the time. Units over 15 years old, garage locations and worn door seals can use much more; add a percentage for that.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a fridge cost per month?
A modern fridge using 400–700 kWh a year costs about $5–$9 a month at 16¢/kWh.
Is a second fridge in the garage expensive?
Older garage fridges can use 1,000+ kWh a year ($13+ a month). Heat makes it worse.
Chest or upright freezer?
Chest freezers usually use less energy because cold air stays in when the lid opens.
How do I measure exactly?
A plug-in power meter over a full week gives a real kWh number.
